No issue has a greater influence on determining your social and political views than whether you view human nature as basically good or not.

In 20 years as a radio talk-show host, I have dialogued with thousands of people, of both sexes and from virtually every religious, ethnic and national background. Very early on, I realized that perhaps the major reason for political and other disagreements I had with callers was that they believed people are basically good, and I did not. I believe that we are born with tendencies toward both good and evil. Yes, babies are born innocent, but not good.

Now that the recent protest rallies of Hanan Ashrawi (the Palestinian terror apologist who spoke at two Colorado campuses on the anniversary of 9-11) are behind us, I'm still asking myself: Where were all the Christians?

The optimist in me wanted to believe they were at home studying their Bibles. You know, the dozens of passages that tell the believer to bless the Jews, bless the land, comfort My people, love good and hate evil, and so on.  'UNDER GOD' BELONGS IN PLEDGE - By Mark Thornhill

There is a good reason why the words "under God" belong in the American Pledge of Allegiance.
It's not because the words promote a religious world view, but because they tell us where our rights as Americans properly come from. Our unalienable rights come not from other men and not from ourselves. Only a source outside ourselves has the authority to bestow unalienable rights.


Our Founding Fathers knew this. In the Declaration of Independence, signed by the Continental Congress in 1776, it is written, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights ..."

DO NORTH COUNTY CONSERVATIVES AND LIBERALS REALLY WANT TO DISCUSS THE ISSUES THAT DIVIDE THEM? Mark Thornhill Commentary


Last month the North County Times ran a story about a continuing series of programs at Palomar College that ostensibly seeks to bring conservatives and liberals in the community together to discuss the topic of gender identity (gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues). The professor organizing the programs says he is concerned that it isn't safe to be different in North County and that what's needed is "Speak Out" events to educate the public about "a quiet undercurrent of prejudice against gays and lesbians on our campus and in the community at large."  (click on title to read entire article)

CAN WE TALK, AGAIN? Mark Thornhill Commentary


Over the last month a minor controversy has been playing itself out in this newspaper's Opinion and Letters pages concerning a series of programs at Palomar College that calls attention to problems North County gays and lesbians face. The controversy started March 24 when I wrote an article criticizing the format of "Speak Out." I complained then that the forum was stacked against and intimidating to cultural conservatives who had been invited to Palomar to discuss gender identity issues.
